It is bumpered up with some of the most adored songs around the globe, and has been teaching the world to sing since 1959. Completely defying its age, it is still the stunning love story, still the resonating tale about climbing every mountain, still the magical theatrical experience it was back then, and will continue to be all of that and more for a long time to come.
Everybody that has ever had a smile on their face when the nuns sang the delightful ‘Maria’, found meaning and encouragement in ‘Climb Ev’ry Mountain’, and tapped their feet along to ‘The Lonely Goatherd’, and even those who are bigger naysayers than Captain Von Trapp before he meets Maria, will be over the moon with the news we have: ‘The Sound Of Music’ is finally back on the road, and will be bringing all things musical and wonderful to Illinois soon! That’s right, Chicago, you better get ready to swoon, because ‘The Sound Of Music’ is coming to the Nederlander Theatre at Ford Center for the Performing Arts on Wednesday 22nd October 2025!

Ever since Richard Rodgers and Oscar Hammerstein II, alongside playwrights Howard Lindsay and Russel Crouse, created ‘The Sound Of Music’, it became clear that it has been destined for international triumphs.
A musical with a more substantial amount of adored numbers is yet to be written; no musical has ever been able to remain relevant despite its age as ‘The Sound Of Music’; and a tale as wonderful, yet bravely addressing major social issues, is yet to be created.
To date, the Rodgers and Hammerstein II masterpiece has been revived countless times - all to much acclaim. It racked up no less than five Tony Awards, a Theatre World Award, and an Outer Critics Circle Special Award, alongside plenty of nominations. ‘The Sound Of Music’ has also been adapted into a hugely successful film that has been enjoyed all around the globe for generations.
‘The Sound Of Music’, inspired by Maria von Trapp’s ‘The Story of the Trapp Family Singers, follows the tale of Maria, a free-spirited nun, who after being appointed as the governess of the seven children of Captain Georg von Trapp, brings back music and happiness to the family. The family is faced with many difficulties - from the imminent Nazi-threat brought about by the Anschluss to the blooming romance between Captain von Trapp - man who vowed to marry another, and Maria, who vowed to remain a nun.
The truth is that there is plenty to love about ‘The Sound Of Music’: from the remarkable musical prowess of the all-star, age-defying cast, to the timeless, wonderful music that you’ll remember for years to come; from the glorious orchestral delivery to the gorgeous sets that float effortlessly from a grey cathedral to the old Austrian impressiveness of the Von Trapp house; from the feel-good tale about overcoming hardship and celebrated tale that has been teaching the world to sing and fall in love for decades to the powerhouse cast that carries their roles with excellence, delivers the music with proficiency, and steals hearts from the get-go.
The song is spot-on: the hills are indeed alive with the sound of music, and this fall, you’ll sing once more.
