Following its 1959 premiere, it became clear that Richard Rodgers and Oscar Hammerstein II’s very last creation alongside playwrights Howard Lindsay and Russel Crouse, was meant for global success.
No musical can hold the candle next to ‘The Sound Of Music’ when it comes to the amount of adored and well-known numbers; no musical has ever been able to remain relevant despite its age as ‘The Sound Of Music’; and a tale as wonderful, yet bravely addressing major social issues, is yet to be created.
No other musical has been revived as many times, had more performances around the globe, and has been received with more acclaim than ‘The Sound Of Music’. Since its premiere in 1959, it has received five Tony Awards, a Theatre World Award, and an Outer Critics Circle Special Award, alongside plenty of nominations. ‘The Sound Of Music’ has also been adapted into an award-winning film released in 1965, and still enjoyed around the globe.
‘The Sound Of Music’, inspired by Maria von Trapp’s ‘The Story of the Trapp Family Singers, follows the tale of Maria, a free-spirited nun, who takes on the massive task as governess for Captain Georg von Trapp’s seven children, and brings much love, happiness, and of course, music, back to the family. The family is faced with many troubles - from the imminent Nazi-threat brought about by the Anschluss to the romance brewing between Captain von Trapp - man who vowed to marry another, and Maria, who vowed to remain a nun.
There is no doubt that there is plenty to love about ‘The Sound Of Music’: from the unbelievable expertise of the oldest nun right down to the youngest Von Trapp child, to the classic, superb music that becomes an earworm without any effort; from the lush sounding orchestra to the sets that change effortlessly from a grey cathedral to the old Austrian grandeur of the Von Trapp house; from the feel-good tale about overcoming difficulty and delightful tale of love, resilience, and music to the highly talented cast that carries their roles with excellence, delivers the music with proficiency, and steals hearts from the get-go.
’The Sound Of Music’ is indeed what the lyrics to the popular song states: it will fill your heart with the sound of music.
