Following its 1959 premiere, it became clear that Richard Rodgers and Oscar Hammerstein II’s very last creation alongside playwrights Howard Lindsay and Russel Crouse, was destined for nothing but greatness.
A musical with a larger amount of well-known numbers is yet to be written; a production that can remain as relevant and treasured for nearly seven decades as ‘The Sound Of Music’ does not exist; and a tale as heart-warming, yet bravely addressing major social issues, is yet to be created.
No other musical has been revived as many times, had more performances around the globe, and has been received with as much triumph as ‘The Sound Of Music’. It landed no less than five Tony Awards, a Theatre World Award, and an Outer Critics Circle Special Award, alongside plenty of nominations. ‘The Sound Of Music’ has also been adapted into a tremendously successful film featuring Julie Andrews and Christopher Plummer, still being enjoyed to this day.
‘The Sound Of Music’, inspired by Maria von Trapp’s ‘The Story of the Trapp Family Singers, follows the tale of Maria, a free-spirited nun, who takes on the massive task as governess for Captain Georg von Trapp’s seven children, and brings much love, happiness, and of course, music, back to the family. The family is faced with many difficulties - from the threat the annexation of Austria into Nazi Germany to the romance brewing between Captain von Trapp - an engaged-to-be-married man, and Maria, who vowed to remain a nun.
There is no doubt that there is plenty to love about ‘The Sound Of Music’: from the incredible musical prowess of stellar cast featuring actors and actresses both young and old, to the classic, superb music that can get even the most ardent naysayer to hum along; from the lush sounding orchestra to the stunningly handcrafted sets that float effortlessly from a grey cathedral to the old Austrian grandeur of the Von Trapp house; from the heartwarming tale about overcoming difficulty and delightful tale of love, resilience, and music to the highly talented cast that carries their parts with excellence, delivers the music with command, and steals hearts from the get-go.
’The Sound Of Music’ is indeed what the lyrics to the popular song describes: it will fill your heart with the sound of music.
